FELIX KRIEGER
FELIX KRIEGER
About
Felix Krieger is the founder, Artistic Director, and Principal Conductor of the Berliner Operngruppe, with which he has been captivating audiences since 2010 through revivals of rare operas. Under his direction, the company has presented, among others, the Berlin premieres of Verdi’s Stiffelio, Puccini’s Edgar, and Mascagni’s Iris, the German premiere of Donizetti’s Deux Hommes et une femme, the posthumous world premiere of Donizetti’s Dalinda or most recently the first international revival and German premiere of Franchetti´s Fior d´Alpe. With these productions at the Konzerthaus Berlin, he has established himself as one of the most distinguished conductors of his generation.
Since early 2024, he has also been a regular guest conductor of the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra, performing in venues such as the Berlin Philharmonie, the Friedensfest Augsburg, and Monheim am Rhein. His recent engagements include, among others, Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the Semperoper Dresden (2025/26), Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro at the Palermo Classica Festival (2025/26), Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges for the Korea National Opera (2024/25), Verdi’s Giovanna d’Arco for Opera Bellas Artes in Mexico City (2024), and Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos in São Paulo (2023).
Krieger regularly conducts productions at internationally renowned opera houses, such as the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Semperoper Dresden, Korea National Opera in Seoul, and Opéra National de Paris. He has appeared on the podium of numerous major orchestras, such as the Staatskapelle Berlin, Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Staatskapelle Dresden, London Sinfonietta, and Orchestre de l’Opéra National de Paris. Under his direction, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performed Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony and Brahms’ First Symphony in China for the first time—a historic concert held in cooperation with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra at the Shanghai Spring Music Festival in 2002.
His discography includes Mascagni’s Iris, nominated for the Opus Klassik, the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik, and the International Classical Music Awards 2022, as well as highly acclaimed recordings of Donizetti’s Dalinda, Wolf-Ferrari’s Il segreto di Susanna, and Mascagni’s Zanetto (all for OehmsClassics), as well as The Art of Ensemble with the London Sinfonietta (Sony Classical, 2018).
Born in Freiburg im Breisgau, Krieger studied piano and viola, was a junior student (piano) at the Freiburg University of Music, and studied conducting with Prof. Klauspeter Seibel at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. He completed his studies in 2001 as a master student of Carlo Maria Giulini at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole in Italy. He received formative artistic guidance early in his career from Claudio Abbado, who appointed him assistant with the Berlin Philharmonic at the age of just 22 in 1996. For the Bayreuth Festival, he worked as assistant conductor to Daniele Gatti, as well as musical supervisor.
His first theater engagements took him to Kassel and Bielefeld, where he worked as Kapellmeister and developed a wide-ranging repertoire. From 2003, he became a regular guest conductor at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, with his production of Ullmann’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis (2013) receiving particular acclaim.
In recent years, Felix Krieger has also emerged as a composer. His work Cantus I – Zwischen den Welten for chamber ensemble was successfully premiered in 2015 at the 49th Festival Musica Nova Gilberto Mendes in Brazil. There, Cantus II – “…durch alle Lüfte bricht” (2017) for chamber ensemble was premiered in autumn 2017, followed by his duo for alto flute and double bass Oh Luft, du edles Element, führ hin mein Liedlein behend in autumn 2020. In November 2021, the ensemble unitedberlin performed the world premiere of Cantus III – Íthymbos (2020) under his direction at the Konzerthaus Berlin as part of the first complete cycle of the Cantus pieces.
Since July 2023, his works are published by Universal Edition Wien.
He lives with his family in Berlin.

“Conductor Felix Krieger is an ingenious partner on the podium“
A. Franchetti: Fior d´Alpe (German Premiere and first international revival), Berliner Operngruppe, Konzerthaus Berlin, Mai 2026
“(…) At the podium, Felix Krieger unleashes Franchetti’s alpine rapture to overwhelming effect (…) Once again, the ensemble delivers Italian opera at its very finest.”
Orpheus Magazin
“(…) What Felix Krieger draws from the Berliner Operngruppe’s large orchestra is thrilling: with discernment, precision and a generous measure of sonic magic. Only with such wholehearted commitment can this complex late-Romantic score be brought to life and, as we might hope, awaken it from its Sleeping Beauty slumber (…)”
Online Merker
G. Puccini: Le Villi, Berliner Operngruppe, Konzerthaus Berlin, June 2024
“(…) The Berliner Operngruppe put paid to all objections to the ghost story about the revenge actions of faded women on their abusers. Felix Krieger conducted a ravishing plea for the half-sunk middle class. The cast was simply inspiring and fabulous.(…)” Neue Musikzeitung

“(…) In addition to the tenor aria, both parts of the symphonic interlude were absolute highlights, hard to beat in terms of atmospheric density and enchanting with dazzling colors and rich agogics (…)” Der Opernfreund Magazine

G. Donizetti: Dalinda (worldpremiere), Berliner Operngruppe, Konzerthaus Berlin, May 2023
“(…) The belated premiere of Dalinda in mid-May at the Konzerthaus Berlin: a sensation. (…) So much immediacy and emotion was rare. The audience is sheerly out of its mind. Standing ovations are rare in the Konzerthaus. Felix Krieger recommends himself for medium and large houses, as a German conductor he obviously has the unusual gift of bringing the intoxicating piccolo Italianità of Donizetti and Co. to life. An extraordinary evening. “
Arno Lücker/Opernwelt July 2023
“(…) In the meantime the group around Felix Krieger is so established that they got the chance from the publisher to do the probably last premiere of a Donizetti opera. (…)
First-class cast, first-class singing (…)
Chapeau and Bravo! (…)
Again a great success for the Berlin opera group, fortunately recorded it remains to hope that the recording will be released as an album.”
Manuel Brug / MDR Klassik
“(…) A coup, realized magnificently beyond expectation (…).
Mad cheers from the bel canto fetishists, to which I will probably also belong(…)”
Kai Lührs-Kaiser/Deutschlandradio
R. Strauss: Ariadne auf Naxos, Theatro São Pedro/ São Paulo, November 2022
” Musically directed by Felix Krieger, the spectacle was splendorous.”
Márvio Dos Anjos , O Globo
“(…) Excellent work was done by German conductor Felix Krieger at the head of the Orquesta do Theatro São Pedro. Under his leadership, the music flowed with the delicacy typical of this work, with precision, with clarity. One heard all the solos (always very well executed), very well marked the instrumental and melodic contrasts created by Strauss between Zerbinetta’s company and the Composer or the tragic singers. Attention for the singers, no one covered and the tempo was fluid (…) May he always come back!”
Fabiana Crepaldi/L´Ape musicale
P. Mascagni: Zanetto & E. Wolf-Ferrari: Il segreto di Susanna. Berliner Operngruppe, Konzerthaus Berlin, June 2022
(…) Once again the best forces were bundled by conductor Felix Krieger to bring the lost treasures over the ramp (…) Standing ovations.
Eleonore Büning, Der Tagesspiegel
(…) But what would the evening have been without Felix Krieger at the conductor’s podium, who knew how to lead his obviously highly motivated, highly professional orchestra equally confidently, inspired and inspiring, through the veristic color opulence as well as through the cheerful transparency of the comedy (…)
Ingrid Wanja, Operalounge
P. Mascagni: Iris, Berliner Operngruppe, Konzerthaus Berlin, February 2020
(…) This rarity, as strange as it is sensual, has now been very subtly polished up by Felix Krieger with his orchestra and choir.(…)
Manuel Brug in Die Welt
(…) Under the musical direction of Felix Krieger, the multifaceted score unfolds in the most dazzling way (…)
Der Opernfreund
(…) Overwhelming was the impression made by the orchestra of the Berliner Operngruppe under Felix Krieger, who was able to brilliantly convey Mascagni’s multi-layered music with its shimmering string brilliance, the impressionistic-melancholic mood and the indulgent melos. (…)
Operalounge
G. Puccini: Edgar, Konzerthaus Berlin, February 2019
(…) The center and soul of this delightful opera evening was once again Felix Krieger, who led his orchestra through the evening as unpretentiously as effectively, conjuring up luxuriant Italianitá. (…)
Opera Lounge
(…) This variety of expression, the constant change from passionate sounds, to chorale-like and then again to songlike, dramatic or seductive ones, the orchestra of the Berliner Operngruppe under the direction of Felix Krieger mastered with bravura (…)
Das Opernmagazin
(…) Right at the beginning, it is especially noticeable how much fun the participants have in this project(…) Apart from the passion, this is also musically really great. Especially the Requiem at the beginning of the third movement succeeds Krieger and his ensemble wonderfully majestically (…)
Tagesspiegel
(…) He (Krieger) conducted Puccini’s EDGAR with great passion and precision through the emotional roller coaster of the opera. (…)
IOCO
(…) No wonder that many singers of the Berlin opera houses sit in the audience and cheer along. No wonder that the evenings of the Berlin opera group are becoming a must for more and more culture enthusiasts. And no wonder that by late summer at the latest, people are curiously waiting to see which opera gem this unique ensemble and Felix Krieger will snatch from half oblivion as winter approaches.

Giuseppe Verdi: Stiffelio, Palacio Bellas Artes, Mexico-City, October 2018
Operaworld
W. A. Mozart: Cosi fan tutte, Theater Lübeck, January 2016
“(…) Felix Krieger is an ingenious partner on the podium, who roughens up his Mozart in a crisp, bouncy and fresh manner and, with his soloists in daringly slow tempi of the arias, illuminates the question of truth and dissimulation on his part.
Die Welt
“(…) This delicate, vulnerable balance on stage would never come to such filigree and impressive effect were it not for Felix Krieger’s musical direction, which held all the strings so virtuously in its hands. The Philharmonic Orchestra of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck plays with terrific precision and clarity in all orchestral groups.(…)”
Opernnetz
(…) Already in the overture Felix Krieger conducts the conflict of confessional vows of loyalty and the love-technical fickleness briskly to the point. At the supposed farewell of the soldiers (‘Soave sia il vento’) he succeeds in creating an unearthly harmony that makes Mozart’s music timeless. (…)
NDR
(…) The evening gains additional tension because guest conductor Felix Krieger lets the small Philharmonic Orchestra feel the nerve of Mozart’s music. Rapid tempi are chosen and confessed, there is silky softness and hardness, seduction and bitch alarm – a psychological masterpiece also on this level (…)
Kieler Nachrichten
(…) Whoever fills these sforzati with emotion here and aggressively drives them forward there, as Felix Krieger does, creates atmosphere and the great arc of tension. The guest on the podium of the Lübeck Philharmonic reads the score with a clear eye, interprets its complexity, inspires the musicians to a historically slender tone. Under these circumstances, the orchestra is at its best. Already with this instrumental flexibility and at the same time unity, the performance in the Großes Haus is an event (…).
GüZ, Lübecker Stadtzeitung
V. Ullmann: Der Kaiser von Atlantis, Staatsoper Berlin, January 2013
(…) That Felix Krieger, at the helm of an aggressive small ensemble of the Staatskapelle, brings out the magic of this music’s colours and relationships with such consummate refinement is the great fortune of the performance. (…)
Deutschlandradio Kultur
Conductor Felix Krieger led an electrifying account of Ullmann´s score. A gripping performance.
